Re: The Random Topic
I would definitely recommend Paint.Net and Gimp as starter programs, once you are fluent in those two, you should be totally okay to start trying your hand to Photoshop. Also, hit up Youtube, I know watching How-To Videos really helped me as far as developing certain techniques like learning how to use the different blending modes for layers to attain different effects.

Re: The Random Topic
I learned from my sister, actually. I started in Gr.7. But she just taught me really, really basic things like multiplying layers and how to use the brush tool. (I didn't find out about locking layers until I asked in Gr.8... >_>)
I really only learned how to use photoshop well by doing random things and testing different functions. Once you know how to use it, it's amazing. I've never tried using gimp or paint.net before, though. It looks complex, lol.

Re: The Random Topic
Just do little itty bitty things and you'll get used to it. =) Try to ignore all the fancy-smanshy stuff and learn it all one by one. It helps if you just build on what you know. Like, using the brush tool set on normal mode and then eventually trying other modes like multiply, colour, or overlay.
It's very easy and useful once you use it for awhile. Trust me, it'll make you say stuff like, "wow, I'm so glad I know how to use this" after you do.

Yes, it's all I use RMVX-wise. Very useful and effective. Easier than Photoshop and Gimp 2 to do easy, small graphics editing.

Re: The Random Topic
I'd rather use something not too memory-extensive for spriting. I'm not doing CGs; just sprites. XD

SPAMMMMMM! OMG MUDKIPS!
I don't think I can work on Photoshop (or GIMP) when talking about pixel art. So, yeah, PDN all the way.

Thing i love about pdn the most is that is has the co-ordinates of the pointer at the bottom and the size of your selection in pixels; really helps when moving sprites about.
